Kendal, a historic market town with a strong shopping reputation, is located on the banks of the River Kent and is renowned as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobblestone lanes and byways lead off the picturesque main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit atop a hill with views of the town. Visit The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, which has a regular collection of portraits by Kendal-born George Romney as well as works by Turner and Ruskin, as well as other exhibitions through its connections with the Tate. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall, with its magnificent Topiary Garden, are both close, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking that provide breathtaking views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills, and Morecambe Bay. Kendal is ideally located for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales, and further afield. Kendal is an excellent site for a quiet stay, with nearby attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, the interesting Quaker Tapestry, Lake Windermere, and the surrounding National Park.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
