Redcar is a coastal town on the east coast, just north of Saltburn. In one direction, towards Saltburn Bay, are miles of golden sand beaches. You can watch the local fishermen bring in their catch of the day while indulging in some of Redcar's famous lemon top ice cream, a favourite of Prince Charles who visits the town frequently. Spectacular views can be had from the 80-foot-tall, vertical Pier known as "Redcar's Beacon," and the museum housing the "Zetland," the oldest known lifeboat, was built in 1802. If you find yourself between Redcar and Marske in the south-east, you can take a stroll along The Stray, a two-mile stretch of grassland between the golden beach and coast road. Just a short drive away, in the Victorian resort of Saltburn, you'll find an abundance of charming tea rooms, delicious restaurants, and unique shops. You can ride what is likely the oldest operating funicular railway in the United Kingdom (the cliff lift), which descended its first 120 feet on June 28, 1884. The 600-foot-long pier, the only one of its kind along the entire northeastern coast, can be found at the end of the lower promenade, and the town can be reached via a stroll through the beautiful valley gardens. The Danby Moors Exhibition Centre and the bustling market town of Helmsley, site of the ruins of a Norman castle, can be found to the south, and the North York Moors provide excellent walking opportunities. Redcar is a great starting point from which to explore the surrounding area.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.
