In close proximity to the old market hall from the 17th century is a modern recreation centre with a swimming pool. Bakewell is conveniently situated within the Peak District National Park for exploring this wonderful region. Both the rocky Dark Peak and the gentler limestone White Peak are easily accessible, as is Britain's premier amusement park, Alton Towers. Stately homes such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are just a few of the many that can be visited, as are the impressive caverns in nearby Castleton and the resting place of Little John in nearby Hathersage. The spectacular Edwardian Opera House in Buxton was created by Frank Matcham, who also designed the London Palladium.

The ultimate in “year-round” appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.
