One well-behaved dog is welcome, but sorry, no smoking. Whitehaven is a coastal town in West Cumbria, nestled between the glistening sea and the rugged Lakeland Fells. It is one of the earliest "planned" towns in England and features nearly 250 Georgian-style buildings on the National Register of Historic Places as well as several lovely parks and gardens. The harbour is now a protected area, and the town's rich past is documented at the superb Beacon Heritage Centre. The area's coastline has a lot to offer, including historic smugglers' villages like Ravenglass and the picturesque red sandstone cliffs of St. Bees, where Wainwright's famous "Coast to Coast" Walk begins.
