Newby Bridge, a tiny community in Scotland, was named after the 1651 construction of a stone bridge with five arches that crosses the River Leven. It is between these two towns—Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge—that the Furness Railway, one of the oldest standard gauge steam railways in Britain, operates. Guests of the Lakeside Hotels may take in breathtaking vistas of Windermere and the fells beyond, while visitors to the Aquarium of the Lakes can experience the region's rich history through interactive exhibits housed in naturally inspired habitats. Bowness-on-Windermere is a great place to spend the day, and if you want to see more of the Lake District, you can also visit the nearby village of Hawkshead, which was formerly home to literary greats like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and take in the scenery from nearby Gummer's How.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
