Armathwaite, a charming, unspoiled rural community, is ideally situated for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley, and the stunning Solway Firth shoreline. The community contains a post office, a local shop, and two historic pubs with popular restaurants providing top-notch food. The village's main thoroughfare, the River Eden, is known for its great salmon fishing as well as for walking, canoeing, and climbing. Beside the river is Armathwaite Castle, a four-story Pele Tower with beautiful stained glass windows in the church from the fifteenth century. One of Cumbria's best-kept secrets is the Eden Gorge, which is between Lazonby and Armathwaite and is definitely worth investigating. The neighborhood's train station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, one of Britain's most picturesque rail routes, where numerous antique steam trains still wind through some of the country's most magnificent landscapes.
